Mapping The Ideology of Muhammadiyah: The Implementation of Islamic Life Guidelines in the Former Residency of Surakarta, Indonesia

Abstract

This research aims to produce a mapping of the implementation of the Islamic way of life guidelines among Muhammadiyah community members in the former Surakarta residency. The study employs a quantitative approach, where the necessary data includes respondents' perceptions regarding the guidelines. A total of 208 respondents were involved, and data collection utilized the Muhammadiyah ideology strength measurement tool developed by Subando, Samsuri, and Muslimin. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The research findings indicate that Muhammadiyah Regional Leaders (Pimpinan Daerah Muhammadiyah, PDM) in Klaten have the highest score in implementing the guidelines (3.68), followed by PDM Surakarta (3.37), PDM Karanganyar (3.17), PDM Boyolali (3.03), and finally PDM Sukoharjo (2.78). Organizational guidelines have the highest implementation score among Muhammadiyah members (3.27), followed by national guidelines (3.21), guidelines for personal religious practices (3.13), and lastly guidelines for social interaction (3.06). Based on the above research results, PDM Sukoharjo has the lowest implementation score, indicating a need for more intensive internalization and benchmarking with other PDMs. It can also consider adopting the pattern of internalizing and strengthening Muhammadiyah ideology from Klaten as a model for improvement.
