Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties with communication, social interaction, and behaviour regulation. Assistive technologies (ATs) play an important role in this context and hold significant potential when integrated with artificial intelligence (AI). Artificial intelligence (AI) and assistive technology have become increasingly important in the diagnosis, treatment, education, and day-to-day assistance of autism in recent years. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools analyse speech patterns, facial expressions, eye movements, and behavioural data through machine learning and data analysis. Timely intervention resulting from early identification is highly advantageous for long-term development. AI analyses a variety of data sources, including genetics, neuroimaging, behavioural patterns, and electronic medical records, to enable early detection of ASD. Timely therapies are made possible by machine learning algorithms' excellent accuracy in differentiating ASD from neurotypical development and other developmental problems. Additionally, augmentative communication systems, virtual reality-based training, and robot-assisted therapy are examples of AI-driven therapeutic interventions that have the potential to enhance social interactions and communication abilities in people with ASD. Exciting developments are currently underway at the intersection of AI and robotics, as well as in the creation of wearable automated devices like smart glasses and smart glasses. The caregiver or therapist enjoys monitoring behavioural development and creating customized intervention strategies. AI and assistive technology greatly improve the autonomy and social involvement of an individual suffering from ASD. Overall, AI and assistive technology significantly enhances the independence and quality of life of individuals living with autism.
